Add/Promote WS 2012 to DC in an existing WS 2008 R2 Domain

To Check Forest functional level in WS2008R2 server, go to Active Directory Domain & Trust, right-click on “Active Directory Domains & Trusts” & select “Rise Forest Functional Level”

Raise Forest Functional Level

To Check Domain Functional Level, right-click on DC & select “Rise Domain Functional Level”

Raise Domain Functional Level

To Raise Forest Functional Level

Insert WS 2012 disk in to WS 2008R2 DC

Run below command in command prompt

Insert “C” & “Enter”

Continue

To promote WS 2012 as a DC

Configure basic settings in WS2012, Add to domain.

Add Roles & Features

Role Based or feature Based installation

Select Server

Select Active Directory Domain Services & DNS Server

Add Features

Add .NET & GPO

Next

Next

Install

Progress

Go to Dashboard, check notification & click on Promote this server to a domain controller.

New Domain Controller

GC & DSRM password

Next

Next

Database Location

Next

Summary

Install

Result

Note: Still all FSMO roles are in old DC

  1. Hello, can a forest functional level of 2008R2 can be promoted to FFL 2012 R2 BEOFRE installaing a 2012 DC macine in the forest? or at least one 2012 DC must be installed in order to achieve that?
